Protest over fuel costs

Posted by news desk in Other News, 28th May 2008, 2:37pm

Hundreds of lorry drivers caused chaos on the capital's roads on May 27 as they protested over soaring petrol and diesel prices.

Hauliers were protesting over increasing prices which have resulted in the average cost of diesel passing far beyond the 120p-a-litre mark.

The convoy of drivers shut the A40 road into London from the west, according to the city's transport agency.

After a rally at Marble Arch, protesters then marched to the prime minister's residence at Downing Street to hand him a letter demanding an urgent meeting over the price rises.

A small group also passed on a copy of the Burns Inquiry undertaken more than two years ago.

The inquiry document advised the Government and the haulage industry of the problems affecting the industry and set out ways to overcome them.

These documents were handed in to the House of Commons during the last protest organised by campaign group Transaction 2007 on April 29.

The protest came as the government faced another potentially damaging rebellion over tax after backbenchers urged Chancellor Alistair Darling to rethink plans announced in the Budget for big increases in vehicle excise duty on "gas guzzling" cars.
