Camden Council pressure pays off for local roads

Utility companies and councils working in London will now have to secure permits and provide information boards where they dig up the roads, after the government gave final approval to the London Permit Scheme, which was heavily backed by Camden Council.

Camden led a group of boroughs plus Transport for London (TfL) in designing the new scheme and has also played a role in trialling the software for running the scheme. The successful trial means the software and systems necessary are ready for roll out now the formal scheme has been approved by government.

Although utility companies will still retain the statutory right to undertake works, rather than simply notifying councils of their intention to do so, they must now apply for a permit.

Councillor Keith Moffitt, leader Camden Council said: "London’s roads, including those in Camden are extremely full both above and below ground, and with around one million works by utilities and highways authorities their coordination will be easier when the council can positively control timing and conditions. These new permits mean we can now offer a much more proactive rather than reactive way of managing street works and keep London moving. "
